Report on Participation at the 1st Niger Delta SDG Youth Summit as Regional Director, International Diaspora Foundation (IDF) Nigeria

Today, I had the privilege of honouring the invitation to attend the 1st Niger Delta SDG Youth Summit, organized by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Nigeria/Africa Region – Rivers State Chapter, under the theme “Empowering Youth for Inclusive Sustainable Development.” The summit was held at the Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (IPES), University of Port Harcourt.

The event brought together youth leaders, development practitioners, academics, and stakeholders committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the Niger Delta region.

The summit featured Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, as the Chief Host; Prof. Ibisime Etela, TAGDev 2.0 Programme Coordinator, University of Port Harcourt, as Host; and Amb. Ipalibo Madodoye, Coordinator of SDG Youth, Rivers State Chapter, as Co-Host.

I attended the summit in my capacity as Regional Director of the International Diaspora Foundation (IDF) Nigeria and was honoured to serve as a Special Guest of Honour and Panel Discussant. During the panel session, I highlighted a critical challenge affecting the effectiveness of the Sustainable Development Goals, which I described as the Institutional Implementation Gap. My intervention emphasized the need for stronger institutional frameworks, improved policy coordination, and greater accountability in order to effectively translate SDG commitments into practical and measurable development outcomes.

The summit provided a valuable platform for meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and youth engagement in the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable development across the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large. It also reinforced the importance of partnerships among institutions, development organizations, and youth-led initiatives in advancing the global SDG agenda.
